This is how the world ends: not with a whimper but with a bang…

A WEST COAST MOGUL BREAKS A FEW RULES OF POLITE SOCIETY BECAUSE HE MUST!

What’s the difference between poverty and insolvency? Poverty is for poor people. Insolvency is merely a shortfall, a nuisance of ephemeral character, unless the odds stack up.

Michael Mulroney is insolvent on a reversal, but he’s not broke. To prove continuing affluence and mobility he buys a $20,000 bicycle. Could a poor man do this? No. He could not.

The latest literary fiction from critically acclaimed American author Robert Wintner, A California Closing [Yucca Publishing, July 2016] is fresh and authentic and centered on Big M OK Used Car magnate Michael Mulroney. So what if he’s leveraged beyond his means, his wife drinks too much, and his neighbors peek in? A real player knows the moves and will be back on top in no time.

A California Closing casts larger-than-life characters you may have met: Closer of renown Michael Mulroney and his pert wife Allison; Betty Burnham, down to her last billions and looking for love after forty years of marriage; Rose Berry, who wants to live the fantasy; and John Waldon, an art forgery swashbuckler whose skill and lust keep him on the lam.

Robert Wintner is an acclaimed author of twenty books, including fiction, memoir and photography. His short fiction appeared in the Hawaii Review and Sports Illustrated. In his latest novel, Wintner again draws on real people living in real time.

“I lived on the California Coast, owned and sold a hilltop house, and rode an obscenely expensive bicycle,” Wintner reveals of A California Closing. “Thoughts congeal on long bike rides. A story formed up, and the plot thickened. Other similarities to place and character are speculative and not likely based in fact.”

Ironic, dysfunctional, believable, and laugh-aloud funny, A California Closing:

  • Is written in a classic style refreshingly free of cliché, platitude, and buzz phrase
  • Spins a tale of epic California in modern times
  • Portrays insolvency as fundamental to the leveraged lifestyle
  • Reminds us that we cannot know what happens offstage

A California Closing [Yucca Publishing, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing] is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and at bookstores everywhere.
